Dubai: The Dawoodi Bohra community in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah marked World Cleanup Day today by undertaking multiple cleanup and awareness drives across different locations.
World Cleanup Day is the largest one-day civic action to engage volunteers across 180 countries, to emphasise global waste management issue and its impact on the environment.
Shabbir Abbas, programme coordinator in Dubai, said: “In Dubai, more than 400 volunteers came together to clean five locations around the community centres in Al Qusais and residential areas in Warqa and Nahda. This was the Dawoodi Bohra community’s 14th consecutive year of organising cleanup and awareness drives in alignment with Dubai Municipality’s Cleanup the World campaign,” Shabbir Abbas added.
In addition to the areas in Dubai, more than 150 volunteers in Sharjah joined hands for their eighth consecutive year to clear waste around Industrial Area 2, aided by Bee’ah — the government waste management initiative.
Similarly in Abu Dhabi, about 50 enthusiastic volunteers cleaned up the area around the Bohra Community Center and Future Needs school.

This cleanup programme, along with other recycling and sustainability initiatives, are part of the Dawoodi Bohra’s global philanthropic endeavour ‘Project Rise’, which is working towards addressing the issues of climate crisis since 2018.
Men, women and children across all walks of life, including professionals, businessmen, doctors, homemakers and teachers participated in the cleanup drive, while strictly adhering to COVID-19 restrictions.
