Initiative aims to reduce burden of chronic diseases while enhancing quality of life
In a pioneering move to transform public health outcomes, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), has unveiled the Personalized Weight Management Programme, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the region. Designed to combat rising rates of obesity and related chronic diseases, the programme combines digital monitoring, personalized clinical support, and an innovative reimbursement model to encourage sustainable lifestyle changes.
Open to eligible Thiqa members aged 18 and above who are clinically identified as overweight or obese, the programme provides a comprehensive, tailored solution that empowers individuals to manage their weight effectively. Through structured guidance, personalized activity plans, and continuous digital and clinical support, the initiative aims to reduce the burden of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers while also enhancing the overall quality of life.
Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH, emphasized that the programme is not just about numbers on a scale. “Our focus is on health not just weight. This programme supports our vision for an active, health-conscious community, empowering individuals through personalized and science-driven solutions,” she said.
Dr. Rashid Obaid Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADPHC, echoed this sentiment, noting the programme’s potential to fill a longstanding gap in healthcare delivery. “Even modest weight loss and increases in physical activity significantly reduce the risk of chronic illness. Yet historically, clear pathways for physicians to refer patients to structured support have been lacking. This programme bridges that gap and provides the tools people need to take control of their health,” he said.
In an exclusive interview with Gulf News, Tony Terzis, Associate VP Medical, Lilly META, praised the DoH’s new Thiqa reimbursement policy for obesity medications as a game-changing development in the region’s healthcare landscape.
“We strongly commend the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi for this landmark decision. This policy is a paradigm shift. It recognizes the chronic nature of obesity and replaces outdated, superficial approaches with long-term, medically sound strategies,” Terzis said.
Highlighting the broader implications, he added, “The UAE is setting a powerful precedent by integrating science-backed obesity treatments into its reimbursement framework. It affirms the clinical value and safety of innovative therapies while addressing the real-world challenges patients face particularly in terms of access and stigma.”
According to Terzis, the initiative is in full alignment with Lilly’s commitment to supporting sustainable healthcare transformation. “Lilly’s work echoes Abu Dhabi’s bold vision for a future-ready healthcare ecosystem. We are committed to local collaborations that bring evidence-based, patient-centric solutions to life,” he said.
Terzis emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in accelerating health innovation. “At Lilly, collaboration is not optional—it’s how we lead. Whether with policymakers, clinical experts, or regulators, we co-create solutions that are rooted in science and shaped by real-world data. Tackling obesity is a collective responsibility, and shared efforts are key to reducing the long-term burden of chronic diseases,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Lilly sees enormous potential for deepening its partnership with Abu Dhabi. “Abu Dhabi is fast emerging as a global hub for healthcare transformation. Its progressive infrastructure, policy agility, and commitment to innovation make it an ideal platform for next-generation treatments. Lilly is ready to invest further whether in clinical research, early disease detection initiatives, or data-driven policy collaborations,” Terzis said.
Globally and regionally, Lilly is focused on reshaping healthcare systems to deliver both longer and healthier lives. “Innovation for us means more than just new treatments it’s about early detection, equitable access, and systems that prioritize long-term well-being,” said Terzis. “Our goal is to ensure that scientific breakthroughs translate into tangible, real-world outcomes for the people who need them most.”
As Abu Dhabi continues to lead the way in redefining healthcare, Lilly remains a committed partner working hand in hand to deliver meaningful, sustainable impact, always putting the patient at the heart of every initiative.
